So my uncle Jimmy (Esteban) invited us to his beach house just north of Esmeraldas along the northern coast which is only about an hour away from Colombia.  It’s a really lovely ranch house that has a small pool, a beautiful view of the ocean, and several shrimp farming “piscinas” to boot.  You have to walk down a small cliff to get to the beach or take a longer bike path to reach the shore.

The tidal range on this beach is really amazing.  When we arrived on Friday, we were at high tide, and the beach was only about 50 feet wide.  The next morning at low tide it was a about a football field.  Very cool.

The water was very warm and shallow for probably a quarter mile offshore.  The waves, as a result, were not that big but fun nonetheless.  We also enjoyed touring the shrimp farm.  We had one of the guys throw the net in, and you simply wouldn’t believe how many shrimp come up from such a small area.  We also saw some red, white and blue crabs as well as a few Blue Footed Boobies hanging out on the walls of the cliff.  It was a very relaxing weekend, and we played a lot of cards, Yahtzee, and Mancala.
